The city of Elkhart began as a village 1832, gained the status of a "town" in 1858, and grew to a "city" in 1875. The city was named after the shape of an island formed by the St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers which is shaped like an elks heart. Elkhart was also the name of the chief of the Shawnee Indian tribe in the area in the early 1800's.
The city is also home to the Robert Young Yards of Conrail, which is the largest freight classification in the country. Other attractions include the Midwest Museum of American Art, and the June Elkhart Jazz Festival which attracts Jazz legends from all over the USA.
